“A small city making a big difference”
Bhadohi is mentioned as a location of significance in both ancient epics of Ramayana & Mahabharata. However carpet weaving in Bhadohi dates back to the 16th century during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar.
The story goes such as that during rule of Emperor Akbar when trade between India & Persia was flourishing an Iranian master weaver set up some looms in the area and began teaching the craft of making carpets to the local population.
The carpet industry has surely stood the test of time and is still flourishing with over 3.2 million weavers employed in the industry. What’s more carpets made in the Bhadohi region have even earned a ‘Geographical Indication’ tag. Currently there are various types of handmade carpets being made in Bhadohi and the city even earned a tag of “Towns of Export Excellence” from the Government of India in 2018
